During the school year, after-school and Sunday sessions are offered for teens. Summer sessions take place on a more flexible schedule. Adult sessions take place on weekdays year-round. Individual and Small Group Offerings*:
Drawing - Drawing skills are fundamental to all visual art-making. Everyone can draw! All activities listed below incorporate and develop those inherent drawing skills.
Painting - Learn to exploit the expressive potential of paint! The primary focus of most studio lessons is oil paint, a powerful traditional medium not taught in many schools. Options like watercolor, acrylic, tempera and mixed media are available with instructor agreement.
Printmaking - Develop new skills in the ancient printmaking tradition. Materials taught include monoprint, soft-cut, linoleum cut and woodcut.
Collage - Explore the active/contemplative process of expressive collage using both found and made materials.
* Note: Karl Stephan Studio promotes outstanding student work on its very popular Instagram account, as well as in Open Studios events and Scholastic Art Award competitions. All students received 2017 Scholastic Art Award Honors. Students are informed of exhibit opportunities, provided with school recommendations and/or letters of introduction.
Special Offerings:
Creative Assessment - All classes include suggested guidance for artistic development. Creative Assessment is specifically for students desiring in-depth discussion of their body of work as a means to further development. This may be a one-time session or multiple consultations. Presentation and discussion only - no materials are needed.
Pre-Professional Consultation - A review of the tools used by professional artists to promote their work, including developing a portfolio, uncovering exhibit opportunities, building a portfolio, establishing a presence online and choosing options for further study.
